Who knew travel to Africa could be so cheap? For around $1000, you can visit the cities on this list with airfare and hotel included. If Africa is on your travel wish list, then consider these five affordable travel destinations.

1. Nairobi, Kenya

Its surprising that Kenyas capital city, Nairobi, is less than a $1000-flight away. Flights leaving from Atlantas Hartsfield-Jackson Airport to Nairobi start at around $770. Want to make the trip even cheaper? Avoid traveling to Nairobi during peak travel times, which usually runs June through September. In fact, the $773 flight quote is for flights leaving the United States in December.

2. Cotonou, Benin

Flights from JFK to Cotonou, Benins largest city, begin at $1000. Benin is not a popular tourist destination, but theres still a lot to see and do. Although Cotonou is not as famous for its wildlife as other African countries, the city is home to two major national parks. If you want to skip safaris and enjoy Cotonou as the residents do, then visit West Africas largest outdoor bazaar, Dantokpa market.

3. Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Addis Ababa is a viable option for those on a strict budget. Round-trip airfare from New York to Ethiopias capital city start $838. Lodging is also affordable throughout the city. Four-star hotels go for less $100 per night. Or, you can rent a full apartment in downtown Addis Ababa for the same rate on Airbnb.com

4. Cairo, Egypt

Cairo is one of the cheapest tourist hotspots in all of Africa. Vacation packages, including airfare and hotel, generally cost less than $1000, depending on the time of the year. Theres also plenty of cheap fun in Cairo. Browsing bustling outdoor markets, like the Khan al-Khalili market, strolling along the Nile River Corniche or viewing the Great Pyramids of Giza from a distance are just a few free activities in Cairo.

5. Johannesburg, South Africa

Roundtrip airfare and a hotel for a week in Johannesburg can be as cheap as $950. Cape Town seems to get all the attention as a tourist destination, but flying into Cape Town can be a few hundred dollars more expensive than flying into Johannesburgs airport. Theres still a ton to do in Johannesburg, such as visiting the Apartheid Museum.]]>
