African American Holiday Association, Black Love day is intended to demonstrate “atonement, reconciliation, celebration and 24 hour demonstration of Black Love through 5 tenets (loving acts) – for the Creator, for Self, for the Black Family, the Community and the Black Race.” Now down in New Orleans, Black Love Day this year is also Mardi Gras Day. So it may be difficult to celebrate this day all at once but here are a few things you can do before partying and parading to celebrate those you love.
1 Hubbard Mansion
This is the quick get away you have always wanted just to get out of the house and away from the kids. This Bed and Breakfast is also conveniently located directly on most Mardi Gras parade routes. After the crowds dwindle, you and your loved one can enjoy the decorated oak trees, the sound of passing streetcars and views of this majestic 19th century mansion. It was remodeled by Rose and Don Hubbard, and is still one of the only family run bed and breakfasts in the city. [caption id="attachment_4925" align="alignnone" width="425"]

2 Compiere Lapin
Spoil your love by treating her to this Caribbean and creole styled restaurant, which is inside the Old N.77 Hotel and Chandlery. Created by Chef Nina Compton, who is best known for showing her skills on Bravo’s Top Chef. Blending these two style of cooking is bound to be amazing. Think curry goat and seasoned drum as entrees. There is also a Brunch option. Online reviews give it about 4.6 out of 5 stars (check out google reviews).
3 Neyow’s
LET.ME.TELL.YOU. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with this place. The ambiance is great. The hosts and waiters are amazing, professional and down to earth. I will be talking about this place again when you come here for Essence. Everything here is good – and that’s difficult for a creole girl to admit; since nothing is ever “better than her grandmother’s food.” But literally everything that’s naturally New Orleans is here from smothered greens, stuffed peppers, to their red beans and sautéed crab claws. A fair warning: don’t go crazy with their Bow Wow Punch.
4 The Mckenna Museum of African American Art
Of course, who doesn’t want to see African American Art. It would not feel comfortable not to put some musem on this list – it’s date night 101. If you are interested in more like this, check out Ashe Cultural Art Center for events, as well as the Contemporary Arts Museum, for their lists of events from art shows to dance and music.
5 Artist Journey Allen
In the middle of Broad St, there is a gallery and art studio by the talented artist Journey. After you see some art, why not create a special piece of your own.
