In today’s digital world, watches are rarely just about time. For Houston-based watch businesses NCMPRBL, watches are transcendent pieces of fine jewelry made accessible to all.

Wondering how to pronounce the name? The letters are not an acronym, but rather stand as a stylistic abbreviation of a word that describes the company’s style: Incomparable.

For NCMPRBL founder Dr. Mario McCoy, watches have fascinated him since childhood.

“I have had an affinity for watches since I was like 5 or 6 years old,” he said recalling the excitement he felt after receiving his first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle watch in a Mc Donald’s Happy Meal. “After that I was hooked. I had to learn what made a good watch.”

Today, McCoy’s company is built on a foundation of both quality and style that has allowed NCMPRBL to see sales from 45 states and 5 countries. The company was also awarded a national partnership with Kevin Harrington, one of the original investors from the ABC TV series Shark Tank.

The design process at NCMPRBL is a team effort. McCoy’s design team pulls together personal inspiration, current market trends, as well as inspiration from Black popular culture to craft pieces that capture the spirit of the moment.

For example, timepieces like the ‘Prolific 42’ and the ‘224’ honor famed baseball player Jackie Robinson and the late rapper Nipsey Hussle, and Kobe Byrant and daughter Gigi, respectively.

This Valentine’s Day, the brand has cooked up a stunning King and Queen Collection that includes; a set of his and hers watches in a rich black and gold, a warm cocoa-colored watch, and a watch with a rose gold and red-faced combo, named ‘XO’.

In addition to serving up great style, NCMPRBL is also in the business of serving the community. This year, they launched their first-ever scholarship dubbed ‘Create Over Conform’. The scholarship rewards young, student entrepreneurs from Houston, Texas or Milwaukee, Wisconsin with a gift of either cash or supplies. Both cities hold significance for McCoy; one is his current city, and the other his hometown.

While the timepieces are his passion, McCoy says his business had a larger purpose to increase Black representation in fine watches and jewelry and to show other Black entrepreneurs what is possible.

“What we represent is a brand that inspires Black excellence.”
