Auto Industry Sees Lack of Black Software Suppliers

An auto industry executive says the lack of Blacks in tech is now affecting the car business. As the automotive industry moves toward more tech-integrated vehicles, Silicon Valley tech companies are outpacing minority automotive suppliers with innovation. A senior Nissan Executive recently warned Automotive News that the company’s efforts to purchase from minority suppliers are becoming more and more difficult as the industry moves toward high-tech cars.   “Software is going to account for more and more of our total expenditures,” John Martin, Nissan North America’s senior vice president for manufacturing, supply chain management and purchasing told Automotive News. “If we don’t address it now, it’s going to threaten our overall [minority purchasing] targets. And that’s a big issue.” In 2016, Nissan set aside 5 percent of its North American purchasing budget for minority-owned vendors, including businesses owned by African-Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Asians and women.
