No one is in touch with the needs of Black people like barbers and hair stylists. Each week they touch people and listen to them talk about their fears and greatest hopes. Barbers also experience problems in their own home, something Robert (Mac) McKenzie knows very well. His daughter suffered from eczema, psoriasis and dry skin, just like her father once had. Mac took sea moss in his smoothies to help alleviate his skin problems but his daughter was too young for that. He’d always helped his clients with their problems so as a father, there was no way he wasn’t going to help his babygirl. Mac made a sea moss soap for her and her skin has remained clean and free from irritation. Today Dermamoss soap is bringing healing to others, all over the country.

Dermamoss is made up of sea moss, shea, cocoa and mango butters. Sea moss has 92 of the 102 natural vitamins and minerals the body needs: it gives us practically everything we don’t get from our food or natural environment. It has anti-aging properties and over time, helps to manage acne, psoriasis, eczema and dry patches. The butters help with scars, stretch marks, blemishes in the skin and even C- section scarring. Dermamoss is 100 percent organic, natural and vegan, great for all types of skin and hair. Dermamoss also makes a soap just for men, formulated with honey, activated charcoal and tea tree oil. Dermamoss gives the skin everything it needs but more importantly, none of the things it doesn’t. Most “soaps” on the market are actually detergents, which are harsh and very harmful to the skin. Most bodywash products are full of dyes and bottled in plastics that transmit other chemicals. Dermamoss is pure soap, fueled by nature’s best enhancements.

Mac’s road to entrepreneurship was a progressive journey. He grew up in a solid home with two amazing parents. His dad retired from Ford Motor Company and ran his own electrician business until he retired, a few years ago. His mom worked for and retired from the school system, as a Board of Education member. Mac worked several jobs before driving trucks for 10 years. He wanted to get off of the road so he went to McCoy’s Barber College, a school that has specialized in launching Black men as entrepreneurs for over 60 years. Barber school piqued Mac’s interest in learning the technical aspects of skin and hair, and to pursue healthy living: Mac quickly dropped 70 pounds in weight. Mac also befriended Randy Johnson, a man with whom he shared a mutual interest in the artistry of cutting hair as well skincare. When Mac shared with Randy the idea of seamoss soap, they tried several different scent profiles and mixes, before coming up with the signature products that Dermamoss now sells.

Dermamoss is the product of a father’s love for his daughter, years of research into healthy living and a barber’s instinct to solve problems. Sea moss is a natural wonder, very close to a real life fountain of youth. It works wonders for the body and the skin, a fact that Mac and his daughter know very well.
