History of Black History Month
Negro History Week was founded in February 1926, by the Father of Black History, Carter G. Woodson. Negro History Week was an opportunity for Black history and culture to be celebrated by everyone. Woodson wanted the Negro History Week celebration to align with Frederick Douglass’ birthday and Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, so he established it in February. By 1976, Negro History Week had evolved to Black History Month. Since then, the U.S., the U.K., and Canada have observed Black History Month.
