Water is life. Every cell, tissue, and organ in our bodies need water to function properly
but we know that all water sources aren’t equal.

Garden of Y.O.U.T.H. Alkaline Water is a Black-owned water company that ships bottles of its healing, alkalized water everywhere. The company is the passion project of Alex Love, a brother from Flint, Michigan who started selling water while in graduate school to get his Master’s of Public Health.

“I was already selling water because we already knew something was wrong with our water up here,” Love told We Buy Black about the origins of his water business. “I was in school at the time and I didn’t have the professional-looking labels or the business expertise. But people kept telling me ‘you need to do something about this!’. These people kept telling me I’m smart enough to do this, so I thought ‘Maybe I am.’”

Fans of alkaline water claim that it has a laundry list of health benefits from increasing metabolism to curing cancer. What makes alkaline water so special is the pH level of the water. In case you don’t remember from science class, alkalinity and acidity are both measurements on the pH scale of 1 to 14. A pH from 1-6 is acidic, whereas 8-14 is alkaline. A pH of 7 is neutral. According to some natural health enthusiasts, drinking alkaline water will help your entire body become more alkaline and thus, more resilient and resistant to disease and infection.

Love says his water has the power to stop hangovers, cool the body down during exercise, and maximize hydration. As a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Love says he regularly hands out his water after-parties to keep his brothers feeling great after a night out.

On average, regular tap water has a pH of around 5.0 to 7.0, Garden of Y.O.U.T.H. Alkaline Water has a pH of at least 10.

While many of these claims have not been backed by the traditional medical establishment, Love says even outside of the party scene, he has observed the life-changing importance of proper hydration for himself.

“While I was working as an intern at a primary care facility in Nashville, I was seeing people come in there and they were using their insurance for what I understood to be symptoms of dehydration due to their lifestyle,” he said.

Love believes that most of our community’s health issues can be traced back to improper levels of hydration. He also says that small, daily choices add up for better or worse. With just a bag of Hot Cheetos here, or a soda and a Black and Mild there, you could be setting yourself up for a cascade of health issues down the line. But simply swapping those Hot Cheetos and soda for 16 oz of alkaline water and fruit, and you’re well on your way to a healthier you.

While Garden of Y.O.U.T.H. Alkaline Water certainly wants you to experience the healing power of its water, the thing Love wants you to know more than anything else is this: Flint still needs our help.

“I really want people to know that Flint still needs clean water. It’s still an active crisis going on. We still don’t have a solution. We’re still here.”
