Zula Essentials: Educating Black Women on the Healing Power of CBD

Zula Essentials is a Black-owned wellness business that’s focused on two things: CBD and empowering Black women to lead healthier lives.

The brand sells premium oils, creams, and gummies, all infused with CBD. If you’re unfamiliar with exactly what CBD is and what it does, you’re not alone. Zula Essentials founder Carla Joseph says she often encounters a lot of confusion about CBD and this fuels her mission to educate more Black women about its healing properties.

“CBD is not the same thing as marijuana because it doesn’t have THC. THC is the compound in marijuana that makes you feel high. THC is the compound that shows up on a drug test,” she said. “More of us need to know about this and more of us need to have access to this. And when I say us, I mean Black women.”

Put simply, CBD is a component found in industrial hemp and cannabis. CBD is commonly used to address anxiety, but studies suggest that CBD may help with both falling asleep and staying asleep. CBD may also be an alternative option for treating different types of chronic pain.

Joseph discovered CBD herself just three years ago, when the stress from her busy life as a wife, mother, and nurse practitioner began interfering with her sleep. On the recommendation of a friend, she tried some CBD to help with her stress and insomnia and when it worked like a charm, she thought to herself, “more people should know about this.”

Thus began Joseph’s journey to business ownership and establishing herself as an expert in the area of therapeutic CBD use. Joseph recommends that new CBD users “start low and go slow” when trying to find out what dosage works best for them. She also recommends keeping a log for 3 to 4 weeks, so you can document (and remember) how each dose made you feel. She admits that although it takes a while to find your personal sweet spot, once you do, the results will be phenomenal.

“My go-to is the 1350 mg of the oil,” she said. “I take a dropper full and I place it under my tongue. Sometimes I take it during the day or sometimes I take it at night.”

For a limited time, Zula Essentials is offering a bundle deal that includes a CBD oil, paired with a cream and a gummy. First-time customers are eligible for an additional 10% off voucher that becomes available when you sign up for their email list.

Because the brand was launched with the healing of Black women in mind, Joseph ensures that a portion of each sale is donated to The Loveland Foundation, an organization that helps Black women and girls pay for therapy services.

“This work is important because cannabis has been used as a weapon against us for so long. It is really our time to heal, our time to put ourselves first, and our time to live harmoniously.”
