dotado™ apparel
dotado™ apparel provides quality apparel that reflects the positive aspects of life and celebrates talents through its artsy and edgy designs, spokespersons and hosted events. Launched in 2011 by Sean James, dotado™ also seeks to honor and elevate Black fashion and bring legitimacy and respect to Black designers. James says, “Growing up, I came from humble beginnings and luxury/designer brands were things that I simply didn’t have. So I decided that I would fuse my creative side with my love for apparel and create my own line.” Although he admits conceptually creating the brand in 1998 but eventually falling victim to doubt, 13 years later dotado™ apparel successfully launched 3 T-shirt designs.
“The weird thing about my apparel line is that it was created by a proud Black man, but named after a Spanish term. So when I first took Spanish class in high school, my teacher was an amazing Black Panamanian woman who inspired me and taught me so much, not only about the Spanish language, but also about Black/ Spanish Culture. She is who inspired me to use the term ‘dotado’, which means ‘gifted’ or ‘to be endowed with.’ ”

James prides himself in creating a fashion line that challenges the way Black designers are typically pigeonholed into producing only ‘urban brands.’ He noticed an absence of Black designers and has become driven to make dotado™ a major brand apart from the typical designer brands. “I want to create a separate table for Black fashion and I want to collaborate with as many talented and inspiring individuals as I possibly can to help do so.”
The most notable talent who’s collaborated with James and dotado™ apparel is fellow New Orleanian and hip hop artist Jay Electronica. The dopest dotado™ product is arguably the Electronica quoted “a thousand kisses to the haters, CAUSE THEY MADE ME GREATER” t-shirts. James says he appreciates and cosigns Jay’s history, lifestyle and musical artistry. “I love Jay’s quote and I love using edgy imagery and slogans to make people uncomfortable and start much needed dialogues. My passions fuel my fashion and I definitely infuse them into dotado™,” he adds.
Sean is also an intense motorcycle rider and enthusiast in his spare time. Thus in the same manner, the premier dotado™ leather riding jacket was created and inspired by his biking lifestyle. dotado™ celebrates life, the good aspects of life.
