The Black revolutionary culinary collective, Ghetto Gastro, is set to release one of its most ambitious, culture-forward projects: Black Power Kitchen – a cookbook crammed with recipes, stunning photos, and essays on the Black experience.

“We specialize in a creative cultural collision through cooking, using food as a tool to tell stories about where we come from and open borders to the cultures that inspire us. We create experiences around the world, making delicious food and collaborating with the best-in-class partners across fashion, art, design, and music,” the brand stated.

Ghetto Gastro is a culinary brand based in the Bronx and created by Jon Gray, Pierre Serrao, and Lester Walker.

Their upcoming project, Black Power Kitchen arms readers with 75 recipes, more than 150 photographs, and thought-provoking contributions on topics ranging from the work of Black mothers to the importance of resistance and rebellion.

According to the brand, this is Ghetto Gastro’s manifesto, reframing the idea of “ghetto” as a reclamation of all that is good in the Black community, centering on food as a means of both nourishment and advancement. Written with James Beard Award-winning writer Osayi Endolyn and with gorgeous artwork and a highly visual design, Ghetto Gastro’s Black Power Kitchen is a powerful introductory book from important voices in the food and design worlds.

Black Power Kitchen will be released in October 2022 and is currently available for pre-order from select Black bookstores, as well as Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Books-a-Million.

Serrao and Walker are professionally trained chefs and Gray is known for his business acumen. With their combined talents, they decided to tell the stories of the global south through food and art. The phrase “Global South” is used to describe a grouping of countries along socio-economic and political characteristics and refers broadly to the regions of Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Oceania.
