Did you know that the United States ranks 31st in math literacy out of 79 countries? Some experts contribute this to the way students learn math in the U.S., where teachers focus on “formulas and procedures rather than teaching students to think creatively about solving complex problems involving all sorts of mathematics” (USA Today).
If you have a child (or children) that struggles with math, Mr. Glenn’s Math Tutoring can help your child succeed through one-on-one tutoring. Founder Kwadjo Glenn started his tutoring business 13 years ago, motivated by the belief that every student can master math. As a former teacher who comes from a family of educators, Glenn taught at charter schools for years until health issues made him step back. With a passion for education, Glenn didn’t want to stop teaching altogether, so he started Mr.Glenn’s Math Tutoring.
Initially, he began tutoring at a facility in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, IL. Glenn loved it, but wanted to take his tutoring services to underserved and underprivileged students. So he started Mr. Glenn’s Math Tutoring in the community of Auburn Gresham and offered tutoring on-site until the pandemic began, which forced his business to move online.
“I decided I wanted to take it to an all-Black, low-income area because I wanted to be able to provide these kinds of high-quality tutoring opportunities to areas that didn’t have these options,” Glenn explained.
Virtual tutoring has proven great for the company because Glenn and his team of tutors have been able to help students outside of Chicago. But the number of students isn’t that important to the business, as Glenn values quality over quantity.
In addition to offering one-on-one tutoring for students in grades K-12 and ACT and SAT prep, Mr. Glenn’s Math Tutoring helps students manage stress, release tension, relieve headaches, manage nerves, and improve focus by teaching them meditation techniques.
At $50 an hour, Mr. Glenn’s Math Tutoring has affordable prices compared to its counterparts. The company also offers financial assistance for low-income students and those affected by the pandemic.
“We have helped more than 400 students improve their study habits, comprehension, and test-taking skills. As a result, these learners have earned better test scores and grades, and their self-esteem and confidence have been boosted,” Glenn emphasized.
