greatest city in America and she’s my world. Everything is greater in Chi and Black love is no exception. The story of Barack and Michelle Obama is a story about the South Side of Chicago, after all. This year we should celebrate Black Love Day in the city by appreciating the rich, extraordinary Black businesses that make Chicago what she is. From dinner and dessert to breakfast the morning after, Chicago offers the best Black owned businesses to help you celebrate Black Love Day (Feb 13th).
Dinner
Fellas you might want to put on a nice jacket and take your lady to Truth Italian Restaurant, located right in Bronzeville. The restaurant was built on Founder Peytyn Willborn’s vision which included a “world class kitchen that produced five star Italian Cuisine for everyday people.” Her vision was to also bring this elegantly designed establishment with great service to the Southside of Chicago.
Perhaps you’d prefer a more causal feel for your evening out or you’d like to order in. Chicago has plenty of options. Here are some of my favorites, all around my neighborhood:

Coffee or Tea
After dinner you might like a sip of coffee or tea. Stop by Sip and Savor for premium coffee or just about any other hot beverage you can think of. They have locations in Bronzeville and Hyde Park.
Dessert
Of course you’ll need dessert. If you’re in the mood for cake, visit Brown Sugar Bakery. They have a location on 75th Street and at Navy Pier. Whether you crave red velvet, lemon or strawberry cream cheese cake, they’ve got you covered.
If you and your date are searching for dessert novelties try Kilwins in Hyde Park (Kilwins is technically a chain but the Hyde Park Franchisee is a black woman). Kilwins sells ice cream, chocolates, handmade sweets and gift baskets.
Breakfast
If all goes well you just might need to go out for breakfast in the morning. My two favorites, hands down, are Batter & Berries and Sweet Maple Cafe. Batter and Berries is known for their exotic french toast flavors, while Sweet Maple is simply amazing at everything. They periodically feature their Cinnamon Roll Pancake — literally the best thing I’ve ever tasted. You can’t go wrong with either restaurant for breakfast. If you’d prefer to stay on the South Side you can check out Peach’s On 47th Street, another spot I frequent.
Didn’t see anything you like yet? Try this list of Black owned eateries around the city. We all have different preferences. One couple might prefer to dress up and go out while another might prefer rib tips at the house. What truly matters is celebrating Black love and doing so in a way that builds Black businesses.
