Aromatherapy

What do you think of when you hear the word ‘aromatherapy’? I used to associate that word with candles and flowers. In my ignorance, I viewed it as a feminine form of therapy that I would never try. A few years ago, I tried it. I simply lit a candle one day and noticed a major shift in my attitude, my spirit, and my overall health. I only lit the candle for the scent with no intention of using it for therapeutic purposes. Since then, however, I’ve embraced aromatherapy. Now, I have to share what I’ve learned.

The Ancients

Do you know where aromatherapy comes from? Neither did I. According to Aromatherapy.com, the ancient Egyptians were the first to develop distillation machines that extracted essential oils from plants. In fact, the Egyptians used cedarwood, clove, and cinnamon to make embalming fluid for the dead. Throughout the centuries, different aromas proved to have a variety of health benefits that can affect your mental and physical health. Continue reading to learn about the benefits. Mental Health

Aromatherapy can relieve many things. The main reason I practice aromatherapy is to relieve stress. Various studies have shown that Black people are more likely to suffer a stress-related injury and/or death than White people. Black people are forced to endure discrimination and harassment based on race and gender. As a result, we experience higher levels of stress and a shorter lifespan overall. But aromatherapy can help reduce that stress, making you feel better and helping you live longer. Aromatherapy can also be used to combat depression. According to the 2014 census, 13.2% of the American population identifies as Black. That translates to 45.7 million people. Of the 45.7 million, 16% (6.8 million) of Black people had a diagnosable mental issue, including depression. Some stigmas surrounding depression in the Black community prevent many of us from seeking the help we need. Aromatherapy may not completely eradicate your depression or mental illness but it may help. As you get older, sleep fewer hours, and/or become inundated with tasks, your memory can suffer. Memory loss is common but frightening and aggravating. When people begin suffering memory loss, it can indicate the early stages of dementia. It could also mean that you have a lot on your mind and you need to sort through some things. Aromatherapy can help you improve your memory. Physical Health

If you’ve ever felt drained of your energy, you’ve probably turned to coffee or energy drinks. Although these are effective, these aren’t the only energy boosters you can use. Aromatherapy is a great way to boost your energy. Take it from an avid coffee drinker: if you overdo it with the coffee, it can lead to other health issues. Implementing aromatherapy is an effective and safe alternative way to boost your energy. Aromatherapy and essential oils have been used to expedite healing and recovery. After accidentally burning himself, French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse used lavender to cure his burns. Gattefosse then coined the term, ‘aromatherapy.’ During WWII, French surgeon Jean Valnet used essential oils to effectively heal the soldiers. Aromatherapy has proven to speed up the healing and recovery process and it could potentially help you if needed. Aromatherapy can also help strengthen your immune system. Exposing your body to certain aromas by mixing essential oils and using a diffuser can ensure your immune system’s longevity. No one likes being physically ill, so it’s best to prevent the illness before it occurs. Certain scents, like peppermint and lemon, can build resistance to illnesses. Side Effects

As with most things, with the good, there is bad. According to Livestrong.com, there is a small number of people who may experience an allergic reaction to some of the oils used in aromatherapy. Common side effects are headaches, lightheadedness, and nausea. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should discontinue use of the oil(s) you are using and seek advice from your physician or homeopathic doctor.
