There’s little doubt about the impact Kendrick Lamar has had on hip-hop, music and culture since he broke into the mainstream with his 2012 album “Good Kid, M.A.A.D City.” Each of his albums has been a musical reinvention in comparison to his prior project and his lyrics are indisputably introspective, conscious, hardcore and unapologetically Black. Clearly, the lyrics on the Compton rapper’s latest album ‘Damn’ have earned him much critical acclaim and now a Pulitzer Prize. Pulitzer Administrator Dana Canedy announced on Monday afternoon that Lamar (30) has earned the award in the music category. In the official press conference, Canedy excitedly called K. Dot’s ‘Damn’ album “a virtuostic song collection…that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African American life.”
Alongside other Black Pulitzer winners such as Alex Haley, Toni Morrison & Wynton Marsalis, Kendrick Lamar continues to achieve greatness, expand cultural diversity and exhibit Black excellence. Lamar, 30, has won 11 Grammy Awards and has been lauded by and has met with President Barack Obama on several occasions.
The Pulitzer Prize is awarded yearly for achievements in newspaper, magazine and online journalism, literature, and musical composition in the United States in twenty-one different categories.
