Kingdom of Mel, short for Kingdom of Melanin, is a Black-owned apparel brand that focuses on Pan-African designs to show how beautiful Black truly is. The brand was founded about five and a half years ago by Tiffany Hill, an artist.
“It started with my Black Goddess collection, which featured the different shades, features, and hair types of Black women. That collection went viral, and I ended up selling all of the pieces,” Hill said.
This is where the first inklings of Kingdom of Mel began. After the success of the Black Goddess collection, Hill started putting her art on t-shirts. She built a customer base through a Black business-focused Facebook group, and in 2016, Hill founded Kingdom of Mel. The first products Hill launched were t-shirts with her art printed on them, and after they sold out, she started to look into manufacturers for bags. During her search, Hill noticed that she could also make shoes, and Kente cloth was the design that came to mind. Hill put the bags on hold and went on to sell out of her first collection of Kente cloth shoes.
“I’ve always wanted to wear African prints like Kente cloth but in an urban wear style.”
The brand’s latest release is a series of travel bags which are high quality, waterproof duffle bags featuring different designs, including kente, country flags, Black liberation colors, and so much more. Each bag is $159, but Kingdom of Mel is currently offering 25% off for new customers.
Hill also owns Manifest My Business, a resource for up-and-coming entrepreneurs who need help figuring out how to work for themselves successfully. She wants to help other entrepreneurs start and expand their businesses to build legacies and generational wealth. Her courses, videos, and services are designed to empower your future in the world of business.
