Protests Erupt In Sacramento Following Police Shooting of Unarmed Stephon Clark

Many citizens of Sacramento are outraged and disheartened by the Sacramento Police Department’s shooting of 23 year-old Stephon Alonzo “Zoe” Clark, and many residents took to the streets on Thursday evening to protest. Groups of protestors gathered on I-5 near the I Street and J Street exits for more than 30 minutes, blocking traffic during the evening commute. The interstate reopened around 6 p.m. after the protesters returned to downtown streets and marched to the State Capitol. The protesters then went to the Golden 1 Center, where the Sacramento Kings were scheduled to play the Atlanta Hawks. The arena was locked and the game started 15 mins late with a nearly empty arena. Stephon Alonzo “Zoe” Clark, a father of two, was fatally shot 20 times by Sacramento Police Department in his Grandmother’s backyard on this past Sunday evening. Allegedly the police officers accused Zoe of brandishing an unidentified object that caused the SacPD to ring a total of 20 shots, killing him on the scene. Prior to Zoe’s death it was reported that a neighbor called 911 on that night complaining that someone had broken several car windows in the area and was hiding in someone’s backyard. Soon there was a call for a helicopter which sought to find the person causing the disturbance. According to the news release, the suspect was described as a man just above 6′ wearing a black hoodie and dark pants. Once the officers arrived at the scene, they identified Clark as the suspect and pursued after him in his backyard. Once they found him, an officer believed Zoe was leading towards him with an object, causing the officers to unload-20 gun shots, killing Zoe in his own backyard. Sadly, the police officers waited 6 minutes before administering CPR to him. Initially the officers said the object in Zoe’s hand was a crowbar, then they retracted their statement saying he had a gun. However, after an intensive search on the crime scene, investigators found nothing but a cellphone. Again leaving another unarmed Black man dead at the hand of the police. We’re Demanding justice for Zoe……

First the @SacPolice said they shot and killed 22 year old #StephonClark and denied him any first aid because he had a gun.

Then they said he didn’t actually have a gun, but a crowbar. Now they admit it wasn’t a gun or a crowbar, but HIS CELLPHONE. IN HIS OWN BACKYARD. pic.twitter.com/rQfwK1HCbp
