Spike Lee graduated from Morehouse College — a Historically Black College (HBCU) — and he’s doing his part to make sure other young people get the same opportunity. Lee, with the help of others, has created the Malcolm X Scholarship for “Exceptional Courage.” This award will benefit undergraduate students who attend United Negro College Fund (UNCF) institutions, who’ve overcome difficult circumstances or challenges to pursue higher education.
The UNCF is made up of 37 HBCUs, all of which have a rich tradition of scholarship and advancing Black communities. The life, legacy and contributions of Malcolm X mirror many of the priorities of these institutions; as such, Lee thought it appropriate to create a fund to increase our collective consciousness of our departed brother, Malcolm. The financial support this scholarship provides will be a huge benefit for students, who are eligible if enrolled in any accredited field of study at their UNCF institution.
Our HBCUs are a treasure and precious link to our collective past. Black influencers today are increasingly using their platforms to bring more recognition to these schools and also, directly benefit them and the students that choose to pursue their education at these institutions. We salute Spike Lee and the students that will benefit from his contributions.
