On Friday, August 6th, community organization CLLCTIVLY is hosting CLLCTIVGIVE, a 24-hour day of giving in support of Black-led organizations in the Baltimore-area.
Supporters can visit their virtual platform to view the organizations, hear their stories and missions, and donate or sign up to support that organization in some way.
Research shows that annually, Black-led organizations only receive 2% of the $60 billion in foundation funding. Since these organizations are usually last in line (or not in line at all) when it comes to major corporate giving, collective support is key.
“I think that giving any amount is important. These are organizations that are often bootstrapping their work. They’re pouring from an empty cup to serve our community. Whether it’s Freddie Gray or George Floyd it’s usually community organizations who are on the ground and responding first. So we want to make sure our organizations are whole and have what they need to continue to serve our communities,” said founder Jamye Wooten.
CLLCTIVLY has been on a mission to support often underfunded Black-led community organizations, investing over $300,000 since their launch in 2019. After the murder of Freddie Gray, Baltimore-based social impact strategist and organizer Wooten noticed that despite the international concern and attention, local grassroots organizations were still struggling to find the money to keep operating.
In response, he started a number of initiatives that eventually formed the organization CLLCTIVLY — a place-based social change organization centering Black genius, narrative power, social networks, and resource mobilization. Through CLLCTIVLY, Wooten helps ensure that Black-led community organizations get the visibility and funding they need to be effective.
This year, in addition to its virtual donation drive, CLLCTIVGIVE will also include a Baltimore Black Business Quest, inviting participants to join a collective mission to seek out and show up at various Black-owned or led organizations and other significant and historic Black landmarks throughout the Greater Baltimore area.
“To create thriving communities across Baltimore, we must invest in these organizations to provide them with the resources to build the infrastructure and provide the financial sustainability needed to support their work,” he said.
