“Developing Options” is a program that started in 2003 by ex-Crip member-turned-activist Eugene “Big U” Henley. You may recall Eugene infamously saying “we’re not in a new time” after President Obama spoke on behalf of the Baltimore riots after Freddie Gray’s death. Well, what you may not know, is that Eugene has been really putting his money wherehis mouth is…for many years! In a 2015 interview with SOHH, Henley said [Developing Options] has “helped put over 150 kids into division one colleges.” So, Monday’s banquet was a special occasion indeed! The event honored past and present members of the Crenshaw Rams—a team in Snoop Dogg’s youth football league. They also paid respect to the likes of philanthropists who have been supporting their cause. T.I. received the “University Iron Man Award” for his donation to the new football field at Crenshaw High School. Wiz Khalifa’s generous giving of multiple donations—up to $100k, earned him the “Epic Man of the Year Award.” Josh Smith took home the “Baller-Shot Caller” award for his gift of new uniforms to Snoop Dogg’s youth league, as well as Crenshaw High School’s football team. Nipsey Hussle was awarded for “spearheading” educational classes while rapper Trinidad James was recognized for donating thousands of dollars to inner-city youth for clothes and shoes. It is so incredible to see prominent public figures making such a huge impact. As Muhammad Ali once said, “service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth.”  ]]>
