The Disaster Called Betsy DeVos

Betsy DeVos, is a public-school reality you cannot and are not attempting to understand. DeVos represents a larger problem with the state of minority education. We have a woman who is so culturally unaware of the world that she, who has never attended public school, does not see why students need to be fed breakfast at school and also believes that HBCUs prove that “choice” schools have been beneficial to our students’ education.

DeVos represents a larger problem with the state of minority education. We have a woman who is so culturally unaware of the world that she, who has never attended public school, does not see why students need to be fed breakfast at school and also believes that HBCUs prove that “choice” schools have been beneficial to our students’ education.
Like other ignorant people of her stature, Betsy would aggressively benefit from a class in culturally responsive teaching from the God-mother Gloria-Ladson Billings for starters. From classroom teachers to Secretary of Education, there is an epidemic of culturally unaware and irresponsible people directly affecting our students’ academic careers and ultimately their futures. Students are in severely underfunded schools, reading books with people who look nothing like them and have teachers referencing The Wizard of Oz when all they have seen is The Wiz. Dear Betsy, representation matters. As an exclusive private school attendee, you are essentially in charge of education in a country that reports 91% of students enrolling in public schools. There are several conditions that exist in the public-school system that you have never experienced. What are you doing to educate yourself about the academic communities you will be serving? Because we are here. Communities where students’ only meals are coming from school. Communities where the binding on books is non-existent. Communities where brown children encounter so many white faces they fled to Historically Black Colleges and Universities to see themselves reflected where they learn. Communities where students have special needs and require a free and appropriate public education (that’s FAPE, an educational mandate if you weren’t aware). You cannot in anyway support education here if you are blind to the conditions, willfully or otherwise. Dear Betsy, educate yourself and do so quickly. Because we the people are going to do our due diligence to ensure that our needs are not forgotten but addressed. We will continue educating you on what it means to be an American-educated student from every vantage point. We will encourage Black teachers to enter school systems that desperately need them. We will share materials from companies with one another that support culturally responsive education. We will continue fighting for education reform and we want you to be prepared to receive it because we’re sending this fight to you.    ]]>
