For the 2015-2016 school year, the average cost to attend a state-run, four-year university was over $9000. This figure will remain about the same (or increase) over the next several years. All of the HBCUs on this list are well under $9000 for in-state undergraduate students. Even further, the schools that make this list offer multiple degrees, unique student experiences and a rich historical background.

Cheyney University of Pennsylvania

Originally called the African Institute, the historical Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is located in the small town of Cheyney, Pennsylvania and less than an hour drive from downtown Philadelphia. At $3619 for in-state tuition, Cheyney University is one of the few HBCUs that offer a full-time course load for under $5000. Tuition for out-of-state residents is $5972.

North Carolina Central University

Located in Durham, NC, North Carolina Central University offers undergraduate tuition for $7746. While this is not as cheap as some of the other schools on this list, the cost to attend NCCU is worth it for several reasons. Most notably, Durham and other surrounding cities repeatedly land on “Best Places to Live” lists each year.

Tougaloo College

Tougaloo College in Tougaloo, MS is just a short ride from Mississippi’s capital, Jackson, also known as the City with Soul. In-state tuition costs just $4870 per semester to attend this historical college in a vibrant city. In addition, the campus’ is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Delaware State University

Delaware State University sits in Delaware’s capital city Dover. There are over 40 undergraduate programs to choose from and in-state tuition is only $3,766. While Dover already has a lot to offer, the city and university are short rides away from other major cities, including Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.

Morgan State University

Morgan State University is conveniently located in Baltimore. Undergraduate in state tuition is 3,818.00, while non-residents pay $8,752. Morgan State is often noted for its student life, on and off the campus.

The University of the District Columbia

The University of the District of Columbia might be situated in one of the most expensive cities to live in, so the affordable cost to attend the university is quite surprising. In-state undergraduate tuition is well less than $5000, at $4462 for commuting students. Resident students pay a little less at $3922 per semester.

Southern A&M

Southern University and Agricultural and and Mechanical College is located in the vibrant and diverse city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Full-time resident tuition is just over $4000, making it one of the cheapest HBCUs.]]>
