The Art
New Jersey-based artist Slim Kadhafi (@skadhafi) has created a beautiful piece of art, titled W.O.W: Women Of Wakanda. Kadhafi describes his art as, “A full-body tribute to [the] Black Panther.” Kadhafi hired two beautiful models, @_heymani and @___oge, and painted their bodies to reflect the gear that actresses Danai Gurira (Okoye) and her army wore in the film.
The Inspiration
Kadhafi’s inspiration behind this piece is not simply in honor of The Black Panther movie. He decided to create this art as a means to celebrate the elegance and beauty of African women and African culture. Moreso, however, Kadhafi wanted to honor those (especially women) suffering from the hair loss condition Alopecia.
Alopecia
Alopecia areata is a disease that causes the immune system to attack hair follicles. The victims of Alopecia typically experience spot-baldness and eventually lose or shave all of their hair. Alopecia affects both women and men equally and usually targets people younger than 20 years old.
W.O.W
In addition to his celebration of African women and of those battling Alopecia, Kadhafi also wants this piece to celebrate those suffering hair loss due to chemotherapy. The two women who modeled for Kadhafi are prime examples of how women who suffer from hair loss are strong, beautiful warriors like the Women Of Wakanda who deserve to be celebrated.
