REVOLT TV is a music cable network from Sean Combs dedicated to the creators of this generation. In an all new episode of “REVOLT BLACK NEWS” Thursday evening, We Buy Black Founder, Shareef Abdul-Malik, was featured. Rather than give the typical talking points on protest and Black anger, Abdul-Malik reinforced that our dollars are the greatest protest weapon we have. Abdul-Malik didn’t go on REVOLT TV to be seen or expand his personal brand. As a true leader in the movement, he went on to give clear directives in this moment and they haven’t changed.
This most recent installment of REVOLT BLACK NEWS was intended to further dialogue on finding solutions for social injustice and what the next steps should be in George Floyd’s case, and similar police brutality events. Leaders and public figures in the community such as Michael Eric Dyson, Brittany Packnett, Rizza Islam, Eboni K. Williams, Mike Muse, Mandy Bowman, Joey Badass, Royce Da 5’9” and more talked about plans for real results for the Black community and how we can proceed to not only hone our power, but take it back for our own benefit. In a conversation with Mandy Bowman, Founder and CEO of the Official Black Wall Street app, and Royce da 5’9, Abdul-Malik recounted the history of We Buy Black, how it was birthed out of a similar moment in history. In response, this platform has committed itself to creating wealth in the Black community and moving towards independence.
During the conversation, Bowman pointed out that money in the Greenwood neighborhood in Tulsa, before the massacre, circulated for five years. In the present, however, the Black dollar leaves the community in a matter of just hours. Abdul-Malik was also careful to point out that Black Wall Street should be thought of as a “street,” which is to say, local. Black people should first look internally and locally to build their economies. Abdul-Malik highlighted that many of the hindrances the Black community faces are not self-imposed but even so, it is for us to see them and overcome them in this hour of history.
