Daniel Willis, who comes from Hamlin, TX, founded the brand in 2003. Willis’s first job was at the local feed mill, which he started working at in the eighth grade. So, naturally, he’s familiar with animals and what it takes to feed them properly.
When a dog food plant was built in his local town, he left the mill to work there. This is where Willis developed an interest in dog food and learned about dogs and their digestive systems. He also noticed how successful some dog food brands were and decided that he could do just as well. Eventually, he left the plant and got a job in the oil industry. When he was laid off, he decided to start his own dog food brand.
Three months after being laid off, the oil company called him back and offered him his job again. At first, he was hesitant to accept because he had started Zach’s Quality Dog Food, but the company said he could do both. Willis said having the job at the oil company helped him keep the brand going and supported him in the early days.
As far as Willis knows, he is the first Black founder of a dog food business in the U.S. and one of only a handful currently operating. Willis has faced some resistance in the pet food industry, but, ultimately, he knows he has a quality product and that’s all that matters.
